Hands on trades careers expo a success for Wodonga TAFE

Tuesday, 4 June 2019

The Hands On Trades Career Expo at Winton Motor Raceway proved a huge success yet again with Wodonga TAFE having a large presence this year.

The Winton event showcases a huge variety of trades around North East Victoria to school students. Providing them access to, and the chance to engage with, industry experts about career opportunities that interest them.

Wodonga TAFE’s Motorsports Training Australia (MTA) brought along their V8 Supercar and Formula Ford, built by Wodonga TAFE students. They ran a tyre challenge exercise, giving the students a hands-on opportunity to practice a real world tyre change that is utilised in the racing pits.

Our Agriculture department were also at the event, bringing along some of their cows and lambs for the students to interact with and be shown what they would be exposed to in an Agriculture course. Also running was the ‘Young Farmers Challenge,’ where students raced against the clock to complete a course of challenges related to the Agricultural industry. There was a test to identify the different breeds of cow, pump and measure liquid, plant seedlings and scull water; all whilst carrying a swag!

The event was also attended by Wodonga TAFE Certificate IV in Massage Therapy and Diploma of Remedial Massage students who were giving free massages over the day and Early Childhood Education and Care students who ran play-dough and slime making sessions!

Finally, our Diploma of Events students supported the event by running a pop-up event styling session, and a three-plate carry race!

The day provides a range of benefits to all who attend with the opportunity for service and training providers to showcase their services in a fun and interactive environment.

Wodonga TAFE’s Event Coordinator, Katie Shalevski, offered an expert insight into the advantages of such an event;

 “Wodonga TAFE supporting careers events like Winton Hands on Careers Expo, is so important to our community,” Wodonga TAFE’s Events Coordinator, Katie Shalevski explained.

“Not only can we provide a taste of what it’s like studying at Wodonga TAFE, but these events also give our current students the opportunity to share and showcase the skills and knowledge they have developed during their courses, all in a fun and engaging environment!”

Wodonga TAFE are proud to be involved in loads of community events, as well as running many information sessions and pop-up events of our own throughout the year. Coming up we will be exhibiting at the next North East Tertiary Information Day (TIS Day) for secondary students.
